Woman Holding Space #1

$1,500.00

43 × 24 × 1.25” stained glass, mirror, silicone, grass

This piece is one in a series of 5 monochromatic glass women completed in 2024. Each woman uniquely “holding space” with full presence in response to these challenging times.

This ‘Woman Holding Space #1’ sculpture has the ability to conduct light in ways that continually surprise me. In certain settings she casts such powerful, intriguing shadows that require carefully looking to see where there’s actual glass versus powerful light/shadow (toggle through the slides to see a bit of how she plays with different lighting).

In some ways she reminds me of altered states I’ve traversed with chronic illness (Lyme), where I’m looking for space, light or elevation beyond the struggle. Trying to find ways to let the difficulty move through me, refine me. Somehow trying to conduct light instead of fear.

Amidst these confusing times I find my 62 year old self feeling that life has maybe honed me to be able to hold space for what’s real right now and for what is yet to come. Many of us can feel we’re heading into a time when collapse of the old broken way is necessary, even as we hold hope that there’ll be something better in it’s place. I’m holding space for that, with as much steadiness, love and acceptance as I can manage. And I’m actively looking to see how others are creatively holding this space too.
